Developing Teaching and Learning (DLT)

Developing Teaching and Learning (DLT) is a short accredited programme for DPhil, postdoctoral researchers and college staff who are teaching at the University. The programme aims to develop your skills in teaching. You will attend workshops, undertake teaching activities, and submit a portfolio for assessment. Meeting the portfolio marking criteria will earn you SEDA (Staff and Educational Development Association) accreditation mapped at UKPSF Descriptor 1 for Teaching and Supporting Learning in Higher Education.

Intended Audience

Teaching seminars are for those who are new to teaching at Oxford. They are for doctoral students and research staff who have recently completed PLTO (Preparation for Learning and Teaching at Oxford), the faculty introduction to teaching, or equivalent and should be attended during the term in which they are undertaking some undergraduate teaching. The seminars run every term.
 

The taught programme consists of a series of interactive workshops.

Please Note

You will have to submit a portfolio within three terms of your completion of the seminars. If you do not submit by this last available deadline, you will no longer be eligible to submit a portfolio and will not get the accreditation.

Objectives

  • Choose teaching strategies and design sessions (e.g. lectures, classes, tutorials, etc.)
  • Consider how your teaching strategies might affect your students' learning
  • Describe your teaching philosophy
  • Evaluate your own teaching (through student evaluation or teaching observation)
  • Use relevant educational literature to discuss your teaching values, strategies and practices
  • Describe different styles of feedback and appropriate ways of using them

You must have completed a faculty-led PLTO course or divisional ILTO. Be teaching in 2 categories in checklist A or 1 category in checklist B (see link below) in the interval after you begin the DLT programme and before you submit your portfolio (up to 3 terms after you start the DLT). Be teaching-registered Oxford University students.
