A Story in Sand: make your own excavation

As part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science 2021, DPhil archaeology student Ruby-Anne Birin (School of Archaeology) led participants on a captivating, story-guided session in which children and families built a story of how people have occupied their landscapes through time. Did they experience drought or flooding? How did they fare during times of war? By creating their own excavations and exploring the hidden items that their characters had left behind, participants explored how landscape layers build-up, and what they can tell us about human impact through time, and how to be sustainable.
